Bike Trail Connections:

Friends of the Chester Valley Trail: http://www.chestervalleytrail.org/

 

One of the Chester Valley Trailheads is in Exton Park. The eventual plan is for the trail to run from the Struble Trail in Downingtown through Chester County to connect with the Schuylkill River and Perkiomen Trails in Norristown, allowing travel by bicycle from Downingtown to Philadelphia. The trail will be part of the planned 750 mile circuitof trails throughout eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey - http://connectthecircuit.org

A real-time, online checklist program, provided by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, with searchable databases and personal checklist option. To find details about recent bird sightings at Exton Park, go to Explore Data, check on Pennsylvania, hotspots, and select Exton Park.

The site offers information about regular bird walks, a list of area birding hotspots, information about birding events, native plants and conservation, and a wealth of links for area organizations and resources

 

Rushton Farm

Just a few miles southeast of Exton Park, Rushton Farm hosts a Junior Birding Club, eastern Pennsylvania’s chapter of the PA Young Birders. Rushton is also the site of spring and fall banding of migrating birds, and ongoing study and banding of saw whet owls. The website also offers information about area conservation, plant sales, and Rushton’s Community Sustainable Agriculture program.

 

West Chester Bird Club: http://www.westchesterbirdclub.org

One of the oldest continuingly active birding clubs in the country, the West Chester Bird Club plans offers field trips and evening programs and participates in the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count, winter feeder counts, the Pennsylvania Migration Count and local breeding bird counts. Club members have published Chester County Birds: A Site Guide and Annotated List, which is available for purchase. Also available are Checklists for Birds of the Middle Atlantic States.

An online guide to native plants of the Chesapeake Bay area and surrounding region, including a geo-locator feature to identify plants suited to your location, a searchable database of the native plants that meet your conditions.

 

Weeds Gone Wild

A national list of invasive plants infesting natural areas throughout the U.S., with background information on the problem of invasive species, illustrated fact sheets that include plant descriptions, native range, distribution and habitat in the U.S., management options, suggested alternative native plants, and other information, and selected links to relevant people and organizations. The site also offers a downloadable pdf publication of midatlantic invasive plants and alternatives.

 

Mistaken Identity?

This site offers a pdf plant identifcation guide called Mistaken Identity? Invasive Plants and their Native Look-alikes: an Identification Guide for the Mid-Atlantic.

 

Weed Warrior Training

Friends of Exton Park is hoping to form a Weed Warrior team for Exton Park, with training specific to our site. In the meantime, the Heinz Refuge weed warrior training offers a helpful introduction to invasive plants, the reasons for removal, and best practices for removal and replacement.
